Pay No Attention to the Man Behind the Curtain
Doris has lived with a cavity in her heart ever since her baby sister was given away 24 years ago — a loss she blames on herself, though she can’t remember why. Convinced she’s unfit for children or family, she is now 36, divorced and alone in 1966 Edmonton, Alberta, where unmarried women without children aren’t doing it right.
Then fate brings her face to face with Prudence — the sister she lost. But Prudence, wary and untrusting, has no interest in knowing her. Before Doris can make sense of the rejection, a tornado tears through the city, leaving two young boys motherless and in her reluctant care. Overnight, Doris is thrust into the chaos of grief-stricken children and their scrappy dog, and she must navigate their needs, fears, and mess as she delivers them to relatives hundreds of miles away. On the journey, Doris begins to discover that love and belonging might not be beyond her reach after all. But to embrace that possibility, she’ll have to face the past, claim her own worth, and decide whether family — even Prudence — could still be hers.
